Proklamasi Monument

The text of the Proclamation of Independence was read for the first time by President Soekarno on 17 August 1945 at the residence of Soekarno Street Pegangsaan Timur No. 56. This historic house, formerly called the "Proclamation Building", has ceased to exist since 1960, Bung Karno approved the proposal of the Vice Governor of the Special Region of Jakarta (DCI) Henk Ngantung for the renovation of the house. At that time President Soekarno had settled in the State Palace. Apparently, the renovation was not realized.

At this location President Soekarno on January 1, 1961 made the first embracing of land for the construction of the monument, "Lightning monument", which was then called the monument proclamation. This monument is in the form of a high sphere with lightning head symbol, like the symbol of State Electricity Company (PLN). The later writing, "Here is the Dangkjung Proclamation of Indonesian Independence on August 17, 1945 at 10.00 am by Bung Karno and Bung Hatta".

About 50 meters behind the monument was built building which marked the beginning of the implementation of "National Development Planning". Only this building stands in that location. One and only one existing building until now.

Among the buildings in this location, only the "Memorial of Satoe Tahoen Repoeblik Indonesia" is directly related to the nuances of the revolution as it was inaugurated on 17 August 1946 at the time of the Allies still in power. On top of the writing carved in marble it had another inscription, "On Oesaha Wanita Djakarta". On the opposite wall there is a quotation of the manuscript proclamation and map of Indonesia also from marble. The shape of this monument is like the emblem of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police as long as it is thrown off its head with a flame picture.

The story of this monument is told by the creator, Dra Yos Masdani Tumbuan, in the book "19 December 1948 War Guerrilla People's War of the Universe", the results of interviews with Titiek WS. Revealed, in June 1946, Yos Masdani as a female student of Djakarta Women Association was asked to make a memorial of proclamation. The request was submitted by Ratulangi and Mien Wiranatakusumah (later known as Ny Mien Sudarpo Sastrosatomo). No funds were provided, unless the name of the executive was mentioned, Aboetardjab from the Bureau of Engineering Kores Siregar, former student of Tehnische Hoge School (now Institut Teknologi Bandung / ITB). Funds must be sought with other comrades.

On the eve of the inauguration, there were obstacles because the Mayor of Jakarta Suwiryo forbade the inauguration on August 17, 1946. There was a ban from the Allies in Jakarta. Mr Maramis who attended this meeting was worried, if forced, there will be a tragedy like in Amritsar (India).

Sutan Sjahrir on August 16, 1946 arrived in Jakarta from Yogyakarta. He considered the inauguration a good idea and he was willing to formalize it. At the time of the inauguration, Allied and Gurkhas patrolled, but there was no commotion. Perhaps because of the presence of Prime Minister Sutan Sjahrir.

Surprising events occurred on August 14, 1960. The Keng Po newspaper reported that the '45 Forces wanted the memorial they call "Tugu Linggarjati" to be destroyed. The strange opinion because the Linggarjati Agreement took place on 10 November 1946, three months after the memorial was inaugurated. According to Yos Masdani, at that time the communists had the power to change the face of history. On August 15, 1960, the memorial vanished.

Together with a number of female characters, including Mr. RA Maria Ulfah Santoso and Lasmidjah Hardi, met Governor Sumarno at City Hall. On this occasion, the Governor handed over three marble slabs that had been attached to Linggarjati monument. At the suggestion of the women present, the marble slab was conveyed to Yos Masdani.

In 1968 to Governor Ali Sadikin submitted a proposal for the monument proclamation rebuilt. This proposal was responded positively, proved to be the restoration affair to the State Secretariat. The restoration was delayed because Yos Masdani left for the United States to study. He rejected the offer of Cornell University who would buy the marble at a high price.

Finally, on August 17, 1972, the Proclamation Monument was inaugurated by Minister of Information Budiardjo at the location of origin, attended by many public figures and political figures. Among those present were former Vice President M. Hatta (resigned December 1, 1956).

On August 17, 1980, President Soeharto inaugurated the Soekarno-Hatta monument read out the proclamation manuscript.
